Top 10 Funeral Songs

Top 10 Strangest Funeral Songs
So much for "Amazing Grace" or an age-old hymn sung to a melody composed by Chopin or Bach and played on a majestic pipe organ. Loved ones who are planning funerals today are opting for rock music and electric guitar riffs, according to a new poll of more than 45,000 people across Europe that was conducted by the digital TV station Music Choice.

Why? Music is part of our popular culture, and families like to play something they associate with the deceased. London's Times Online reports that the trend to choose popular tunes over classical music at funerals has been growing since the 1960s. So instead of "Abide With Me," the congregation will stand and join in a rousing version of Queen's "The Show Must Go On." Alan Slater of the National Association of Funeral Directors told the Times Online, "We live in a much more secular society, and as a result we have seen a change to music content at funerals."

The top 10 favorite funeral songs in Europe:

Queen's "The Show Must Go On"
Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven"
AC/DC's "Highway to Hell"
Frank Sinatra's "My Way"
Mozart's "Requiem"
Robbie Williams' "Angels"
Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever"
The Beatles's "Let It Be"
Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters"
U2's "With or Without You"

Choosing the music that will be played at your funeral is a way to express your personality one last time. "Wanting to share your most treasured musical gem with those you're leaving behind is the perfect way to sign off and leave a lasting impression," Music Choice music and marketing manager Simon George told the BBC News.

Call it the last song you'll never hear.

We attended a service for a friend a few years ago.  Knowing he didn't have long to live, as the back of his heart was gone and couldn't have another surgery, he spent 5 months doing anything he wanted.
He played golf at the Club[ a hot August day of 110 degrees], played cards in the 19th hole, went out to dinner, went home and died about midnight.
Thomas was 58 yrs old.

His service was the most unconventional one we've ever attended.
"The Dance" by Garth Brooks was played, along with other non-religious songs.

Tne song I would have played if this were Mr L,
[gawd forbid] is "One More Day" by Alabama.

For my Mom, "She's An Angel When She Flies"
Dolly Parton.
If possible, I would have one of our good friends [whom my Mom adores] and is a recording artist,[big in the 70's]  sing at her service,  "He's Alive"

For myself, I've always said to roll me in during the second verse of "How Great Thou Art"!
Why ruin my image now?  hehehehehe Grin

......and a good one that describes Mr L & I, our life together, at graveside has to be,
"Turn Out The Lights, The Party's Over"
by none other than TEXAS own Willie Nelson.

Okay, LL, quit yer laughin'  Grin

This is the song that will be played at my service.

Westlife
Seasons In The Sun

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We´ve known each other since we
Were nine or ten
Together we´ve climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and abc´s
Skinned our hearts and
Skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend it´s hard to die
When all the birds are singing
In the sky
Now that spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and i´ll be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were
just seasons out of time

goodbye papa please pray for me
i was the black sheep of the family
you tried to teach me right from wrong
too much wine and too much song
wonder how i got along

goodbye papa it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky
now that the spring is in the air
little children everywhere
when you see them i´ll be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the songs like the
seasons have all gone
we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like
the seasons have all gone

goodbye michelle my little one
you gave me love and helped
me find the sun
and every time that i was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on
the ground

goodbye michelle it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing in
the sky
now that the spring is in the air
with the flowers everywhere
i wish that we could both be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were
just seasons out of time

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

I4S, I LOVE that choice.  And luci, The Dance is an awesome choice as well.

I always thought about Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

When are you gonna come down
When are you going to land
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man

You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing the blues

So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough

Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

What do you think you'll do then
I bet that'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again

Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground

One song that we both love and was sung at our wedding is,
"The Twelfth of Never" by Johnny Mathis.
This will be played at both our memorial services.  We hope  Roll Eyes

LL, I'm not a big Garth Books fan,  I would not have selected it.
We all thought it possibly had some meaning for he and his girlfriend.

Personally I'm glad people have gotten away from conventional songs
sang at services.
Why have a downer day?  Celebrate the person's life Cool

P.S.  I like both your song choices  Wink

yeah I4S, I like that song..... but I like the original version of it that Westlife's.... Cheesy

for me, I'd want the song 'What a Wonderful World' for my funeral... i feel peace listening to this.... Cheesy

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD
 (George Weiss / Bob Thiele)

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"
They're really saying "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

 Oh yeah

Pau, that one of my very favorite songs.  I like it to much when I hear it I almost cry!  Yes, I shall write that one down also, along with "Everything Is Beautiful".

Genius, none of know what death is like, I do know I'm not ready to leave my Husband, Children or Friends yet!  Some people don't believe in Christianity.
I'm afraid NOT to believe!  So I do and prayer for forgiveness is a must!

Getting close to death a year ago gave me a stronger strength and faith.

My cousin died almost 10 yrs ago, it was the hardest thing, we were 9 days apart and very close.  He was 18.  I heard my family talking about a traditional funeral and I said no way.  Nathan would have never wanted that.  Nathans favorite artist was 2 pac.  So I said, get a getto and play that.  No one was thrilled with the idea but it was what he would have wanted so I made sure that is what he got.

Im not sure what song I would like during my funeral, but I have made it clear that when the service happens at the grave site I want bag pipes with Amazing Grace being played.  Amazing Grace was my grandmother's favorite song and my grandfather loved the bag pipes.

Neeloc, that was played at my 2nd cousin's service a few years ago.  It is beautiful!

My husband sings [well, we both do] but he sings "My Way" which was recorded by Frank Sinatra, written for him by Paul Anka.  That song would be a must at his service, if Im here to plan it.  He lives it and loves the song!  I guess a lot of men relate to it.

At least you got to say goodbye to your cousin.   My cousin who is 3 weeks older than I and we were always close as kids, died two years April, about this time.  I was not told until we got back from visiting in Maui.  We had talked before we left and he was so weak then form the cancer.  When I called and got a man's voice message I did not recognize, I called anaother cousin and he told me the news.
He died and was cremated and his ashes spread over a Lake he loved somewhere in Nevada or California.  We have a large family and none of us got to pay our respects.  No closure, only an emptiness that I feel.  ......but he did it his way!

He told me before he died to get all the family  together
and have a party and be happy!  We did that!  Grin
