Chinese Inspectors Say 10 Percent of Milk Tested is Tainted

China's quality watchdog says it has discovered that some milk sold to consumers by major dairy companies is contaminated with an industrial chemical at the center of a tainted infant formula scandal.
 
The General Administration of Quality Supervision Inspection and Quarantine said in a report published on its Web site Friday that 10 percent of milk samples were tainted with the chemical melamine. The samples came from three leading companies: Mengniu Dairy, Yili Industrial Group and Bright Dairy.
 
Two major supermarket chains in Hong Kong pulled all liquid milk products from Mengniu Dairy, and the authorities there have ordered a recall of dairy products made by Yili. U.S.-based Starbucks says it has ordered its 300 cafes on the mainland to pull milk supplied by Mengniu.  
 
Chinese authorities say four infants have died after drinking formula made from contaminated milk powder.  
 
China's health minister says more than 6,000 babies across the country were sickened and 158 infants are suffering from acute kidney failure.  
 
Authorities say the infants drank milk formula that contained melamine. It is believed the manufacturer used the chemical to give watered-down milk the appearance of having high protein levels.  
 
In the wake of the scandal, China has canceled inspection exemptions given to companies with proven quality records.
 
Meanwhile, 12 people have been arrested in Hebei province, bringing the total number of arrests to 18. Six of those arrested allegedly sold the chemical, while the other 12 were suppliers accused of contaminating the milk.

Here we go again.  
 
Actually I've consumed the Yili ice cream (one of the brands mention) - no wonder the ice cream tasted odd. Fortunately, I am fine enough to continue posting on this forum.  
 
I am very disappointed with these dishonest business folks. Last year the Chinese government executed one of these corrupt businessmen, but obviously there is no use.

You would think that there would be a stop put to this after these companies have been caught so many times. Sad
