Pregnancy Now Punishable By Court Martial
 
The commander of American forces in northern Iraq has made getting pregnant - or getting someone pregnant - an offense punishable by court martial. Military-wide policy requires female servicemembers who discover they are pregnant while in Iraq to leave the country within 14 days, but individual generals have the power to impose consequences that apply only to those under their command. Military officials say Maj. Gen. Anthony Cuoloco III, who commands troops in cities including Kirkuk, Tikrit, and Mosul, imposed the rule to discourage pregnancies that could disrupt unit readiness. "When a soldier becomes pregnant or causes a soldier to become pregnant through consensual activity," an Army spokesman said. "The redeployment of the pregnant soldier creates a void in the unit and has a negative impact on the unit's ability to accomplish its mission." No one has been punished under the new policy, which went into effect Nov. 4.
