LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Old School" may not have pleased critics, but it has quickly gone to the head of the DVD class, selling more than 2.2 million units its first week in release, according to several industry sources.

DreamWorks' $74.6 million box office comedy, directed by Todd Phillips, has outperformed initial sales expectations made by the studio's home video executives.

"It's currently tracking similar to a $90 (million)-$100 million box office movie in terms of DVD sales its first week out," said Kelly Sooter, DreamWorks' head of domestic home entertainment. "It's currently tracking similar to 'Maid in Manhattan,' which was targeted to a much wider audience than 'Old School,' which is more of a male-oriented comedy."

"Old School" topped Nielsen VideoScan's weekly DVD First Alert sales chart in its debut week and landed at No. 2 on Video Store magazine's weekly rental chart, earning an estimated $11.24 million for the same frame. "Old School" was rental-priced on VHS.

MGM's "Die Another Day," starring Pierce Brosnan, remained the No. 1 rental movie for a second consecutive week, earning an estimated $13.19 million in the week ending June 15 for a 12-day rental revenue total of $29.8 million.

Sony's debut of "Tears of the Sun," starring Bruce Willis, debuted at No. 2 on VideoScan's First Alert DVD sales chart for the week ending June 15; it also earned $8.75 million as the nation's No. 4 best-renting video.

Nielsen VideoScan is a service of VNU that collects VHS and DVD sales data from a sampling of all categories of retail stores. VideoScan charts do not include sales data from Wal-Mart and Toys "R" Us. Most other sell-through retailers are represented.

Video Store magazine, a leading business-to-business weekly serving the home entertainment industry, compiles and analyzes VHS and DVD rental data through an interactive methodology using a multisource predictive model with data from a statistically significant national sample of video retailers.
