PBS Returns to the Past with 'Colonial House'
Sun, Jul 28, 2002 11:34 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Following the success of "1900 House" and "Frontier House," PBS will turn its time machine on again next season.

The latest installment of what the public broadcaster calls "hands-on history" programming will be "Colonial House." Families will live together in a small settlement just as early English colonists did upon arriving in America in the 17th century.

Production of "Colonial House" is scheduled to begin next year, says Pat Mitchell, president and CEO of PBS.

"Like '1900 House' and 'Frontier House,' 'Colonial House' promises to capture our audience's intellect and imagination with a compelling present-day story solidly rooted in our past," Mitchell says. "What is really unique about this type of documentary is the way it melds a kind of reality television with the strong educational foundation you can only find on PBS."

As in the previous two "House" series, participants will give up their 21st-century lives to live as people did in the past. That means no cars, electricity or plumbing. The families in the settlement will live by a set of laws they will write themselves, after consulting with experts on colonial history.

Beth Hoppe, executive producer for Thirteen/WNET, the public TV station producing "Colonial House," says the program may dispel some misconceptions about how colonists lived.

"The settlers wore bright clothing, they often drank heavily, believed in witches, had pre-marital sex and adulterous affairs, and committed both petty and serious crimes against their neighbors," Hoppe says. "We believe that the 21st-century participants will have much more in common with their 17th-century counterparts than they imagined."

How cool!  As a history buff, I loved Frontier House, and now I've got Colonial House to look forward too!

I was a big fan of Frontier House and look forward to PBS's latest effort in "Colonial House".
I think these programs are the ULTIMATE survivor- type shows!  Modern man doesn't really appreciate just what our forefathers had to endure day to day.

Does anyone know where they will be filming?
