Sony's New Game Show Angers Labor Unions

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - When the economy was thriving, there was "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?," now there's "Who Wants to be Employed?"
Actually, the real name of the show is "Human Resources," a television format from Sony Pictures Television International that rewards unemployed contestants with jobs. SPTI secured the international format rights to the program from Imagen Real, S.A. in Argentina, according to industry sources. Similar formats are on the air in Germany and Hong Kong.
On "Human Resources," the show's producers retain an employment agency to find ads placed by prospective employers. The top two applicants for the position take employment tests and go through a day of on-the-job training before appearing on the program. There, they are introduced to the audience and take part in a question and answer session. Viewers vote for their favorite contestant over the phone.
The AFL-CIO, which represents more than 13 million workers in the United States, disapproves of the show concept, saying that the concept further demeans the unemployed. Labor union groups in Germany and Hong Kong have also spoken out against the similar shows in their countries.
SPTI has not announced plans for an American version of the program.
