JP: I think this is the better Detour.
username: Why? Ahh--ahh--ahh-chooo!!
JP: Well... if we find gold instead of the clue, then who cares for the million dollar prize?! :laff:

Wow, I'm sure it's close but I don't know what I've seen more: Genius asking for extensions or Popo quitting games. :laff:

For this Detour, both Detours are actually equally good choices. I just want your 10 uses to be really creative, things that i've never known gold/cotton can be used for or never would have thought of it. Hence the more uses you have sent in which i am impressed with, the better you'll do for this Detour. Hence, teams completed the Detour in the following order -

Ruth and wgal provided me with 9 uses of cotton which i'm impressed with -
20 Minutes

MK and Xochitl provided me with 5 uses of gold which i'm impressed with -
30 Minutes

JP and username provided me with 3 uses of gold which i'm impressed with -
40 Minutes

Heather and Popit provided me with 2 uses of cotton which i'm impressed with -
50 Minutes

Genius and Amarillo provided me with 1 use of cotton which i'm impressed with -
60 Minutes

However, Heather and Popit will receive a 30 minutes time penalty for not following the instructions given on the clue. You are supposed to provide me a source for every use you've found.

Genius and Amarillo will also receive a 15 minutes time penalty for making up 2 uses which they themselves admitted doing it, which is obviously not allowed.

CURRENT STANDING

NOTE: All teams took 15 minutes to travel by taxi which cost Z$2,000 to their respective Detour tasks.

Ruth and wgal open their next clue in first place...

ROUTE INFO

Teams must now drive one of the marked cars parked outside their respective Detour tasks and drive themselves to the Mukuvisi Woodlands in Harare, Zimbabwe. Once there, teams must search in the preserved natural woodland for this animal where they will then find a cluebox beside it which contains their next clue.

One team member from each team must now PM to me the name of this animal which can be found in the Mukuvisi Woodlands in Harare.

Can you post the list that everyone sent in?

Personally, I don't like clues that are "subjective".

Ruth and wgal - (Basically everything except Number #1)

1. Making Chinese paper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton)

2. Making the modern US dollar bill (http://www.cotton.org/pubs/cottoncounts/cotton-currency.cfm)

3. Scent the room – a cotton ball is saturated with cologne and dropped into a vacuum cleaner bag. As the floor is vacuumed, the scent is expressed and permeates the room (http://www.rd.com/extraordinaryuses/openContent.do?contentId=238 25)

4. Flight mildew – a few cotton balls are soaked in bleach and placed in hard-to-reach spots in the bathroom. After a few hours, the mildew between tiles is gone. (http://www.rd.com/extraordinaryuses/openContent.do?contentId=238 25)

5. Rescue rubber gloves – push a cotton ball into the fingers of gloves, preventing long nails from puncturing the fingertips of the gloves. (http://www.rd.com/extraordinaryuses/openContent.do?contentId=238 25)

6. The linters of cotton are a valuable source of cellulose which can be made into photography films, envelope windows, etc.
(http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/sci/A0920734.html, http://www.unctad.org/infocomm/anglais/cotton/uses.htm)

7. Cottonseed Meal, the remains of the seed after the oil has been extracted, can be rendered as flakes, cakes, or pellets, depending on its intended use. Cottonseed meal has a high protein content and plays an important role as a supplement to livestock feed and natural forage. (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/CC/drc4.html )

8. Cotton-based mulches produced from cotton gin byproducts and cottonseed hulls used to reduce soil erosion  (http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/Publications.htm?s eq_no_115=180071)

9. Cottonseed hulls have been used to provide roughage in feed since the latter decades of the nineteenth century. In the early decades of the cottonseed-oil industry they were also used as fuel for the mills. The ashes of the hulls were useful as fertilizer and could be bleached to produce lye for making soap. (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/CC/drc4.html )

10. Protecting little fingers – the ends of drawer runner are padded with a cotton ball, preventing the drawer from closing completely, saving children’s fingers (http://www.rd.com/extraordinaryuses/openContent.do?contentId=238 25)
