Newell Interested in 'Potter IV'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Harry Potter may have a fellow countryman calling the shots soon.

Director Mike Newell is in negotiations with Warner Brothers to direct "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," the fourth in the Harry Potter series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Newell has yet to see a script or meet with the studio's executives, but Warner Bros. is working to attach a director as soon as possible since "Goblet" is slated for a 2005 release.

If an agreement were reached, Newell would be the first British filmmaker at the helm of the Harry Potter franchise. He joins an international stable of directors that includes the U.S.-born Chris Columbus, director of the first two films, and Mexican Alfonso Cuaron, who is directing the third part of the series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," which will be released June 4, 2004.

"Goblet" will be a pivotal film in the series, being the middle installment of Harry Potter's adventures. It also marks the first time that one of Potter's friends is killed.

Newell's next film is Revolution Studios' "Mona Lisa Smile," which stars Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles and Maggie Gyllenhaal and opens this December.
