No one captures the lives of the lovelorn and the love-seeking in New York City better than columnist Carrie Bradshaw does. As fodder for her column, single and fabulous Carrie looks to the experiences of her best friends and her own. Never shying away from difficult or delicate subjects, Carrie has covered everything from emotional dependence to sexual independence. And somehow, through all her research and realizations, she's remained open to the possibility of finding love among the ruins.
Of all her paramours over the past four years, no one has captured and frustrated Carrie's heart as much as Mr. Big. Their sexual chemistry was undeniable, as was the fact that Big would never fully commit to Carrie.
And every time Carrie mustered up the strength to say goodbye, there he was, driving up in his chauffeured car and luring her back with his charm. Until he married. Then, along came the anti-Big, Aidan Shaw - good-hearted, good-looking, emotionally honest and ready to commit. Carrie fell for Aidan's authentic charm. Still, the bad girl in her couldn't sever itself from Big and she embarked on a torrid affair with her married ex. When she came to her senses and ended the clandestine tryst, she confessed to Aidan and watched him and his broken heart walk away.
Until this season, that is, when Carrie and Aidan were reunited - each a little older and wiser. However, at each step forward in the relationship - living together and then getting engaged - Carrie was overcome with doubt. She struggled to quiet her fears, but ultimately realized she wasn't ready to walk down the aisle with Aidan. Single again, Carrie turned to getting her life in order. She moved from being a "renter" to an "owner" and put her career on a new track with a job at the mecca of fashion journalism, Vogue. Nothing signaled the "end of an era" more than Big's decision to move to Napa, California. Carrie's said goodbye to her past and is striding forward with renewed strength and faith in her destiny.
Fashion Sense
The most fashion-forward of all the Sex and the City girls, Carrie's style defies all categorization. Rummage through Carrie's closet and you'll find haute couture pieces side by side with vintage frocks, downtown club wear and miles of Manolo Blahnik stilettos. Carrie expresses her eclectic, whimsical self and that of her city through a masterful and sometimes outrageous mix of these styles. A fashion chameleon, Carrie can start her day looking like a streetwise pixie, change into a neo-bohemian outfit for lunch, don an elegant princess dress for dinner and slip into a skin-baring ensemble for a late-night party. Every season, she makes a signature statement through her accessories. First it was the nameplate necklace, then the colorful flower pins, and "baguette" bags and this year, gloves, newsboy hats and the diamond/gold stackable jewelry from Mia and Lizzie.

Charlotte has a refreshingly optimistic outlook on love and romance amidst the ever-complex dating scene of NYC. Well-bred, Charlotte walks through life with a perfect sense of decorum. And a lot of idealism. For years, Charlotte had a crystalline vision of the life she wanted to have. First and foremost, she wanted to get married. She wanted true love. And she wanted her husband to be wealthy, handsome and belong to the social elite. Dr. Trey McDougal seemed her Prince Charming, but her marriage is far from what she had hoped it would be.
Not one to give up easily, Charlotte has worked hard at her less-than-perfect union - from dragging Trey to sex therapy to confronting her meddling mother-in-law Bunny to quitting her art gallery job to devote herself to wifely duties.
The sex got better, but when Charlotte decided it was time to procreate, things began to unravel again. Unable to conceive naturally, she started hormone therapy and considered adoption. Trey's reaction to Charlotte's determination was to pull away and question the decision to have a child. As Charlotte became aware of their very different visions of the future, their marriage quickly dissolved. Giving up her dream of holy matrimony hasn't been easy, but Charlotte hasn't become embittered about love or life. She's returned to her love of art as a volunteer guide at the Museum of Modern Art and she's taking time to heal before she gets back in the dating game.
Fashion Sense
Charlotte's wardrobe reflects her Park Avenue lifestyle and feminine charm. Her classic and chic style is timeless. Pastel pieces coordinated with matching accessories show off her girlish side.

Miranda is smart, self-assured and proud of her achievements. She raises the bar for herself continually - be it in her professional or personal life. She made partner in her law firm and was able to buy her own pre-war apartment on the Upper West Side (Take a look inside). However, she's struggled with her love life and at times, abandoned the pursuit of love altogether. Tough and down-to-earth, she doesn't open up easily, masking her vulnerability with cynicism and self-mocking. Throughout her long-term relationship with Steve, she had bouts of doubt about her true feelings and was constantly frustrated with Steve's laid-back approach to life.
His attempts to bring their relationship to a new level only seemed to push her farther away. They gave up, but managed to salvage their friendship. Much to her dismay, Miranda's post-Steve dates haven't panned out. Recently, when Steve lost one of his balls to testicular cancer, Miranda boosted his male morale with a night of passion. Shortly after, she realized she was pregnant. She had every intention of having an abortion, but minutes before the procedure she had a change of heart and decided to keep the baby. She wondered if this was her last chance at motherhood. As her pregnancy progressed, she feared she didn't have a maternal instinct and struggled to juggle her demanding career with her new identity as a mommy-to-be. Nature took its course and with Carrie and Steve by her side, she gave birth to Brady Hobbes. She's now facing her biggest challenge in a life she's worked hard to control.
Fashion Sense
For pragmatic Miranda, fashion is more about getting the job done than following the latest trends. By day, her lawyerly look tends towards smart tailored suits. This year we've seen her experiment more with color, especially rich wines and purples that accent her fiery red crop. Though she tends toward casual sportswear on the weekend, she keeps up with the girls just fine in sexy slip dresses and funky accessories.

Scintillating Samantha is a successful PR exec who knows what she wants - and much of the time she gets it. She radiates confidence in everything she does - whether it's landing a star client, getting a table at the trendiest restaurant or bedding the hottest guy in a room. Samantha embraces her uninhibited sexuality with a diverse (and large) group of lovers - from wrestling coaches to power bachelors to a studly farmer. Forget wedding dreams; Samantha takes lust over love any night - and she's proud of it. This season, she experimented with lesbian love, but when her "girlfriend" demanded more intimacy, Samantha knew it wasn't going to work out.
Her next conquest, the unabashedly confident ladies' man, hotel magnate Richard Wright, seemed Samantha's perfect match. But as the sexual affair progressed, Samantha found herself feeling much more than lust. As her emotions surged beyond her control, she declared her love to Richard. Somewhat resistant, Richard offered to try monogamy. When Samantha caught him cheating on her, she was thrust into uncharted territory - the land of the broken-hearted.
Fashion Sense
Samantha's high-power lifestyle demands a wardrobe ready to make a statement at every occasion. For work, she gravitates towards body-accentuating suits in bold colors and at night she turns up the volume with racy ensembles that show off her bombshell figure and personality.

Does Dolce & Gabbana do maternity wear? Are there Burberry baby bibs? And can a pregnant woman really toddle around on Blahnik stilettos?

All questions that faced HBO's Sex and the City crowd last month when series star Sarah Jessica Parker announced she and hubby Matthew Broderick are doing the real-life baby thang. The good news--since most fans seemed to be against introducing another screen baby into the pack of sex kittens--is that producers have decided not to write the pregnancy into the show's upcoming season.

The flip side of that, however, is that the fifth season, currently (and tentatively) set to kick off on July 21, has been shortened from a planned 13 episodes to a paltry eight. The reason: With just two episodes in the can, SATC execs don't feel they can complete more than six additional episodes before Parker's usually flat and frequently exposed tummy begins to swell.

More importantly, no one wants to risk health woes for Parker, whose doctor-prescribed rest was part of the reason the show took a brief hiatus after her pregnancy was announced.

Still, sashay onward through the lives of SATC's drama mamas we must. Here's a look at the City planning we hear producers have done for the oh so abbreviated schedule. (For more on SATC and other summer TV, catch Hollywood Heatwave: The E! Original Special, premiering Friday, May 17, at 10 p.m.)

Carrie, finally free of her entanglements with ex-flame Mr. Big (Chris Noth) and ex-fiancé Aidan (John Corbett), returns to single life with a vengeance--learning to eat alone in a restaurant--and with an even skimpier, sometimes kookier, wardrobe than in seasons past, a source says.

When producers were considering working Parker's pregnancy into the storyline, plans included a Mr. Big return. Now, according to one set insider, the focus will be kept on Carrie, the also-single Charlotte (Kristen Davis), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), with a few guest appearances by the father of Miranda's baby, Steve (David Eigenberg) and Steve's mom, who will be played by Ben Stiller's real-life mom, comedian Anne Meara.

Former Saturday Night Live star Molly Shannon guest stars in a multi-episode arc as a magazine editor who gives Parker's Carrie an assignment or two.

Oh, and let us not forget one of the all-time biggest SATC cads, Samantha's rich-guy ex, Richard (James Remar), who we--and Samantha--last saw in a very graphic sex act with another woman. Incredibly, he manages to get Sam to take him back at the beginning of season five. But when his eye, and various other body parts, wander again, Samantha serves up some revenge: She walks around the city handing out fliers with Richard's name, face and the word "cheater" on them.

Another episode finds the gals hopping a bus to Atlantic City, where they hope to get lucky--in more ways than one--at Donald Trump's Taj Mahal Casino.

Kristen Davis recently revealed the SATC cast's wish list of season five guest stars, which includes newlywed Benjamin Bratt, Star Wars Episode II star Ewan McGregor and recent Friends guest Sean Penn. Davis also alludes to the fact that former ER star George Clooney is perpetually a sought-after SATC hunk. "We've given up on George [though]," she says, "because you can only plead for so long."

LOS ANGELES - There must be something in the Evian on the set of HBO's "Sex and the City."

Cynthia Nixon, 36, who plays Miranda on the Emmy-winning comedy, is pregnant with her second child. The actress and her boyfriend of 15 years, New York professor and photographer Daniel Mozes, also have a six-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Unlike co-star Sarah Jessica Parker's pregnancy though, Nixon's will not affect the show's shooting schedule since she is not due until the end of the year, after the show has already wrapped.

However, some creative lighting, blocking and wardrobe will be called into play, since Nixon, who just had a baby on the show last season, will not be doing so again.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oh, baby! The fabulous four of "Sex and the City" are back, but the click-click of their stiletto heels is being challenged by the pitter-patter of little feet.

Nowadays, kid stuff is a factor on this HBO adult comedy in more ways than one.

The real-life pregnancy of Sarah Jessica Parker, who stars as sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw, required an early production wrap last spring and held up the season premiere by a month. Returning Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT, the series was able to complete just eight new episodes, rather than the planned 13.

Meanwhile, Carrie's weeks-old godson Brady is introducing such issues as diaper-changing and breast-feeding to a series that heretofore has smiled upon its Manhattan gal pals as they chased romance in fabulous shoes.

The fourth-season finale, which aired in February, found high-powered attorney Miranda (played by Cynthia Nixon) giving birth to an adorable little boy, as well as to heightened doubts about her fitness as a single mom.

Charlotte (Kristin Davis), the openhearted art dealer and Smith graduate, finally closed the book on her failed storybook marriage.

Samantha (Kim Cattrall), the liberated PR exec with an appetite for anyone sporting muscles and Y-chromosomes, had fallen prey to her first-ever monogamous relationship -- only to catch her true love cheating with somebody else.

And Carrie, the self-described "sexual anthropologist," bade a bittersweet farewell to her beloved ex, Big, who moved to California.

Now the fifth-season premiere reconvenes this sisterhood at their favorite brunch hangout, where they feed on one another's latest news -- with certain limitations.

When Samantha vents about her boyfriend's betrayal in her typically raunchy way, Charlotte shushes her and glances at baby Brady, who, parked on a chair in his carrier, seems amused by the chatter.

"It's OK, nothing has to change," insists Miranda, struggling to preserve the old candor. "Just think of this as a big purse."

"Oh, Miranda," says Carrie, "your purse just threw up."

Confab over, shopping seems in order. But Miranda neglected to bring a Snugli for toting her son. Forlornly taking her leave, she and Brady catch a cab for home, "moving slowly away from her old life," as Carrie narrates it, "and quickly into her new one."

Is "Sex and the City" also moving away? The disruption this baby could impose has already raised concerns among the show's fans, who know that a baby born to a series is usually less a blessed event than a cry for help.

But since its premiere in June 1998, "Sex and the City" has steadily grown bigger and better, with no trace of creative fatigue. Last year, it won the Emmy for best comedy series (an unprecedented achievement for any cable show).

The women will still wear fabulous clothes and have fabulous conversations, but they realize they're not 25 anymore.
Nowhere, except within its characters as a natural progression of the show's storytelling. As the new season dawns, these 30-something ladies are socked with age-appropriate anxiety. They suspect that somehow time is passing them by.

Wistfully, Carrie reflects on carefree days "before the baggage, breakups and babies began to weigh us all down."

Despite passionate apologies from her two-timing boyfriend, Samantha has trouble believing he can change. Even Charlotte, determined to believe there's still a Mr. Right in her future, has to seek reassurance from a positive-thinking guru.

Carrie wonders what's the point. "Maybe it's not even advisable to be an optimist after the age of 30," she muses. "Maybe pessimism is something we have to start applying daily -- like moisturizer."

Of course, the better plan for all concerned might be upping their intake of reality, and there's nothing like a baby to dispense it. The healthy disruption little Brady represents seems just the right developmental step for Miranda as well as her friends. And a smart creative step for the series.

In any case, Cynthia Nixon (herself expecting a second child by the end of this year) was psyched to play the mom of this tiny new character -- and had no fear of being upstaged by the various babies who would share his role.

"I really like working with babies," Nixon said in a recent interview. "When you just let the baby do its own thing and then react to it, it makes YOU look like such a great actor, and makes the scene look so real. Because it is!"

So, welcome back, "Sex and the City," and welcome, Brady, to it: Ushering in a reality check, you're all set to reign as the show's new Mr. Right.

What's Carrie Got To Hide?

HAVE you ever noticed that the only one on "Sex and the City" who never seems to (pick one) have any, get any, shag, boff or shtup, is the only one who's supposed to write about getting some, shagging, boffing and schtupping for a living?

Is it me or does Carrie spend a lot more time cuddling and conjugating verbs than she does in nights of carnal bliss - for a sexpert that is?

I wrote about this last year when I first noticed that the only one who didn't have to contort into positions only a yogi could love was Carrie.

I figured that it was because the suits at HBO didn't want to have the star of the show become a big pig and turn off the viewers. While it's always good for secondary characters to be big pigs it never works for the lead.

I mean, can you imagine if the Samantha character was the lead? It would be like watching "The Robyn Bird Show."

But it does seem odd, when you think about it. Not only is Carrie not having a lot of on-screen sex, but she's the only one whose breasts have stayed tucked away for all five seasons.

Miranda, even Charlotte, and as often as possible Samantha all let the twins out of the cage at least once per show. Or one of them seems to on every show.

On the season opener, however, all three let all six fly. Or maybe that was more like five since Charlotte only showed one breast when requested to by a sailor. Is she patriotic or what?

And maybe Miranda's giant nursing breasts don't count at all because the breasts that she displayed to Carrie clearly weren't hers - or not the same ones we've all seen over the years. Is there such a thing as a nursing-breasts-body-parts model?

So why isn't Carrie naked - ever?

Believe it or not, because like Nancy Reagan, Sarah Jessica Parker just says no. You'd think that someone who is in a show about sex wouldn't be all hung up on letting it all hang out, right?

But she prefers to stay under wraps - literally. In fact, when Diane Sawyer asked Parker this very question on "Good Morning America," she answered "I just said no."

And in doing so, Parker has hit a home run because it always seems that women who take it all off for the camera usually ruin the fun of the characters they're playing.

Take Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) on "Sex Feet Under." I used to love her so much I even cut my hair off so it would look like hers. Brenda used to be a bit piggy. Now she's a big piggy all the time. It has degenerated into just another soap with sex.

But that can't happen on "Sex and the City." For one thing, how can you have a show called "Sex and the City" without sex? And naked women.

And thank God, an equal smattering of naked men.

At least it's a nudie equal opportunity operation, which seems if not fair, well, at least fair game.

SNEAK PEEK AT SIZZLING SEASON ENDER

Excuse Liza Minnelli if she doesn't laugh at the season finale of HBO's uproarious comedy "Sex and the City."

The episode is a hilarious spoof of her recent over-the-top wedding to David Gest.

The ENQUIRER has an exclusive sneak peek at the season ender, called "I Love a Charade."

In the show, a ritzy wedding -- much like Liza's -- brings Carrie and Charlotte face-to-face with new loves, leaves Miranda wondering about a future with the father of her baby and drives Samantha to battle party-crashing bimbos.

"In the opening scene, the girls have just learned that socialite Bitsy Von Muffling plans to wed piano-bar crooner Bobby Fine (played by openly gay actor Nathan Lane)," explained a show insider. "All four are stunned by the news and muse over why Bitsy -- with all her money and charm -- would marry gay Bobby. They also question whether or not Bitsy and Bobby have sex."

When Liza married producer David Gest in an incredibly extravagant ceremony March 16th in New York City, there was much speculation about their sex lives. But Liza herself answered the question in an exclusive ENQUIRER interview, insisting that her husband is definitely NOT gay!

" 'Sex and the City' is really pushing the envelope on this one," continued the insider. "But the writers believe that Liza will take the show's parody of her wedding in good spirit -- and probably think it's a riot!

"Meanwhile, the four 'Sex and the City' stars all continue to seek 'Mr. Right.' Miranda (played by Cynthia Nixon) again hooks up with Steve -- the father of her baby -- and she catches herself wondering if there might be something more between them than just friends who accidentally slept together.

"Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is caught off guard when three bleached blonde 'double D' bimbos crash a party at her friend's opulent Hamptons home, trading insults with Samantha and refusing to leave.

"Charlotte (Kristin Davis) can't figure out her relationship with Harry -- the sloppy, uncouth attorney who's handling her divorce case. She finds herself both repelled and attracted to him -- and they have wild sex together. But at the party she also finds herself growing to love him when he takes care of her drunken ex, Trey.

"In the last scene, which takes place at Bitsy and Bobby's reception, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) bumps into Jack Berger, a handsome, witty, young writer who she first met while planning her publicity party. Jack has broken up with his girlfriend -- and they agree that maybe they should go out on a date!

"Charlotte confides to Harry that she's falling in love with him. He responds by telling her that he won't be able to marry her -- because she's not Jewish!

"Charlotte is left speechless as the cliffhanger ends the season with a hilarious twist and a bang."

How is little Brady fitting into the glam world of his mother now that we're four episodes into the new season on "Sex and the City"? As far as I can tell, not so well.

Miranda has always been my favorite character on "Sex and the City," and I appreciate that the writers don't want the baby to become the show's focal point, but, aside from the oft-mentioned baby weight, I fear that Miranda has completely forgotten that she recently gave birth. Most of the moms I know who are breast-feeding are on a strict schedule and the amount of time they can be away from the baby is extremely limited. However, Miranda has time to leisurely browse a bookstore, take a trip to Atlantic City, go to Weight Watchers' meetings, and devour a glazed donut.

In general, babies are a problem on television. Typically, when an infant is added to a show it's because of the original cute kids are getting too old. That's why we had the arrival of Chrissy Seaver on "Growing Pains," Andy Keaton on "Family Ties" and Uncle Jesse's twins on "Full House."

Sometimes a stork's delivery demonstrates a couple's marriage journey. Hence, Paul and Jamie's daughter Mabel on "Mad About You." Or it represents a significant change for the character. The biggest example of this is, of course, "Murphy Brown." On rare occasions, a baby's arrival advances some mysterious plot. Think Scully's son on "The X-Files" or Darla's delivery by staking on "Angel." There are times when a pregnancy doesn't quite make sense. I don't know about you, but I'm still not sure why Roz had Alice on "Frasier."

Miranda's pregnancy last season was a nice juxtaposition to Charlotte's desperate attempt to get pregnant, but now what? She clearly views her baby as a burden and is constantly leaving her newborn with hired help. She couldn't wait to leave the baby with Steve for the weekend even when he was nervous about being alone with him.

I do like the universal truths the show is hitting on and the "mom myths" the series is shattering. Many moms struggle with breast-feeding and are happy to have time away from the baby. What bothers me is that we didn't even see Miranda calling home to check on the little Brady. I'm totally okay with her not being a stereotypical mother. It's a welcome change on television. But so far we haven't even had any proof that she loves her son. That's not the Miranda I've come to know and love.

I'm also concerned about how Rachel's little bundle of joy will fare on "Friends." The producers have said that baby Emma won't be a focal point, similar to how Ben is currently treated. But Ross is Ben's dad and Ben lives with his mother. Even though we don't see him often, we can take comfort in the fact that he is well cared for. But we're going to see Rachel every Thursday. I want to know that she is a good mother and that Ross is being a good father.
