The Law

Homicide Detective Jimmy McNulty
It's McNulty's conversation with Judge Phelan that creates the storm that results in this joint murder/homicide investigation. McNulty's "good police" who wants to do the right thing, only this time, it gets him caught in the middle. He knows the investigation should include full surveillance but the Lieutenant's orders are clear -- no sprawl, straight "buy and bust" only.

Narcotics Detective Shakima Greggs
"Kima" is the best narcotics detective Lieutenant Daniels has. Her personal connection with "Bubbles" gives her an unexpected advantage in this new investigation.

Lieutenant Cedric Daniels
Daniels gets his marching orders from the Deputy Commissioner who insists on this investigation being limited to "buy and busts" only with no major surveillance or extras. Daniels will deliver but his instincts tell him this investigation will require more than the routine basics.

Homicide Detective William "Bunk" Moreland
"Bunk" is McNulty's partner with plenty of cases to work. When he's called in on the murder of a man who testified against D'Angelo, he gets inadvertently involved in the joint investigation. He doesn't completely blame McNulty for creating this storm but Bunk warns McNulty to put personal desire to sprawl the case aside for the routine buy-and-bust method.

Narcotics Detective Ellis Carver
Ellis is the "yin" to his partner Herc's "yang". He also's ready to see some action with this new investigation, only he may not be ready for what's ahead. He and Herc work with Detective Greggs and they'll all now work on this case.

Narcotics Detective Thomas "Herc" Hauk
Hot headed and ready to fight, this Detective works with his partner Ellis Carver. Herc's excited about this new investigation because it will give opportunities to "crack some heads" in the process.

Deputy Commissioner Ervin H. Burrell
The Deputy Commissioner's feeling the heat from the judge so he orders Lieutenant Daniels to make this joint investigation routine with no surveillance or extras. Furthermore, he advises the Lieutenant to watch Detective McNulty carefully since it was McNulty's blabbing that got the department in this mess.

The Dealers

D'Angelo Barksdale
D'Angelo's a young mid-level dealer who's just beaten a murder rap thanks to his uncle Avon Barksdale. He's the target the police will focus their efforts on to get into Avon Barksdale's operation.

Stringer Bell
"We do worse and we get paid more." so says Stringer Bell, Avon Barksdale's no-nonsense lieutenant. Stringer's job is to keep all business operating smoothly every day. Stringer handles the necessities including occasional payoffs to crime witnesses. Stinger's serious and the closest to leader Avon Barksdale you can get.

Avon Barksdale
Avon controls the most powerful drug trade in West Baltimore. He's seldom seen and is so elusive, the police don't have any information or files on him. He runs a tight ship and takes no excuses from anyone in his organization.

Bodie
Bodie's job in the Barksdale crew is to make sure the money makes it's way from customers to "the count". Because he's the first line of defense in "The Pit", he's seen and learned the hard way how scams get played by both junkies and the law. When necessary, Bodie dispenses his own justice to anyone who screws up, whether they be customers or his crew members.

Bubbles
"Bubs" is a street junkie who works "The Pit" for his fixes. After his partner in crime is brutally beaten by Bodie and his crew, Bubbles decides on revenge. This decision soon benefits Detective Greggs, with whom Bubbles is secretly connected.

Did anyone else watch?  I thought it was really good, reminded me of Homicide.  Funny thing was they are set in the same city, Baltimore.  I wonder if that's a deliberate nod to Homicide.

I missed it on Sunday, but I saw it last night ... I thought it was great!   Smiley Here's a recap of the first episode ...

Episode 1: "The Target"
Homicide Detective Jimmy McNulty visits the trial of D'Angelo Barksdale, a midlevel dealer accused of murder. Although one witness identifies D'Angelo as the killer, the prosecution's star witness recants her testimony and the jury returns a not guilty verdict. After the trial, Judge Phelan calls McNulty in to discuss what happened. McNulty explains how this is one in what could be a line of related murder cases committed by the Barksdale crew -- who also control the drug trade in the Franklin Towers projects. Furious, Judge Phelan calls the Deputy Commissioner who contacts Major Rawls (McNulty's boss)who calls McNulty on the carpet for blabbing. Soon Lieutenant Cedric Daniels gets ordered to start a joint homicide/narcotics investigation into the Barksdale crew. Narc detectives Greggs, Carver, and Hauk join Homicide detective McNulty in a basic "buy and bust" investigation only McNulty protests because he believes results can only be achieved with survellance and wiretaps. Meanwhile, D'Angelo returns to work and discovers he's been demoted and returned to street level deals in "The Pit", a low-rise housing complex. While there, he meets his new crew and schools them on better ways to serve their customers. When a body is found in the complex, D'Angelo recognizes it as the one witness who fingered him during his murder trial.

"You cannot lose if you do not play." - Marla Daniels"

Synopsis: The witness who testified against D'Angelo winds up being a murder case for Detective "Bunk" Moreland. However, McNulty tells Bunk that since the victim testified against D'Angelo, this murder was probably ordered by Avon Barkdsdale. McNulty and Bunk pick up D'Angelo for questioning and convince him to write an "apology" to the victim's family. Just as he's about to start, D'Angelo's attorney arrives and makes him leave. Meanwhile in "the Pit", Detective Greggs gets some inside information courtesy of Bubbles. New investigation team member "Prez" arrives with a heavy reputation of incompetence, which worries Lieutenant Daniels. Daniels's concerns are supported when Prez teams up with Herc and Carver to make their own moves in the case by going to the projects to "bust heads" for information. Things backfire and a quasi riot ensues.

Directed by: Peter Medak

"The king stay the king." - D'Angelo

Synopsis: After early morning "field interviews" conducted by Herc, Carver and Prez lead to a minor riot and bad publicity for the police, Daniels gets called in by the Deputy Commissioner. McNulty sends Mahone and Polk to the terrace to get a photo of Avon Barksdale. They come up short but soft- spoken Freamon comes through with an old photo from Barksdale's boxing days. McNulty and Greggs visit FBI agent Fitzhugh to try and obtain some surveillance equipment. D'Angelo delivers the daily count to Stringer Bell who in turn, gives D'Angelo a bonus. Later, while Bodie and D'Angelo wait for the new supply to arrive, D'Angelo offers to get food. While he's gone Bodie, Stinkum and the crew go to retrieve the new supply only renegade dealer Omar and his crew get there and steal the drugs for themselves. The next day D'Angelo gets chewed out by Wee Bey -- a Barksdale enforcer -- for not being around when the incident happened. After getting chided by his superiors, Lieutenant Daniels mobilizes the team to raid "The Pit". Bodie hits one of the detectives while getting arrested and the rest of the officers proceed to beat Bodie. McNulty secretly meets with agent Fitzhugh who tells him to watch out for Lieutenant Daniels -- who might be on the take.

Episode 4.: "Old Cases"
Written by: Teleplay by David Simon. Story By David Simon & Edward Burns
Directed by: Clement Virgo

"It's a thin line 'tween heaven and here." - Bubbles

Synopsis: Bodie manages to slip through security and escape from lockup. Meanwhile Herc and Carver continue their renegade ways by travelling to Marlboro to find Bodie and beat him into giving up information on the case. Once they get there, Herc has a change of attitude after meeting Bodie's grandmother. Furious at being robbed of his product during the "re-up", Avon Barksdale instructs Stinkum, Wee-Bey and Stringer to double the existing reward to anyone who eliminates Omar and his crew. When Bodie returns to the pit, he explains how no jail can hold him because he's too tough. He further challenges D'Angelo's mettle by implying that D'Angelo's weak. D'Angelo responds by telling how he killed one of Avon Barksdale's ex-girlfriends after she threatened to give Avon up to the police. AFter hearing this, Bodie becomes cautiously impressed. Sgt. Landsman tells Major Rawls that despite all the screw ups, McNulty's tenacity and obsession with getting the job done usually results in closed cases and that the Major should probably cut McNulty some slack. Detective Freamon discovers D'Angelo's pager number just when Greggs and McNulty figure out a cloned pager could be the advantage they need.
