Secrets of Survival story safe with Conestoga TV student
Saturday August 31, 2002
BARBARA AGGERHOLM
RECORD STAFF

KITCHENER -- Conestoga College student Rob Osburn has a $10-million secret.
If he lets slip details about the upcoming Survivor: Thailand reality TV show, the 24-year-old student -- who worked on the production -- is stuck for big bucks.

He has seen Survivor 5, uncut, without commercial breaks, because he helped film it.

It's enough to make a normally chatty guy downright circumspect.

"I've got to be careful," said Osburn, who is entering the second year of Conestoga College's three-year broadcasting, radio and television program.

"I signed a 1 1/2-inch contract that basically said I'm liable for $10 million if anything I say reveals any aspect of the outcome of the show."

So don't even try to ask him who the two finalists are, what survivors ate or who hated whom. That's off limits. No way.

It's not just the money. Revealing the ending would destroy the magic, he said.

Osburn was one of about 300 crew members who trekked by plane, truck and Zodiac boat this summer to an island off the coast of Thailand to film the reality-TV series, which premieres Sept. 19.

He was the cameraman's right-hand man, smoothing the way for his boss to record every twitch, whisper and snore of 16 American contestants who want $1 million so badly they'll invite millions of viewers to dissect their every move over 39 days.

Close up, he's seen contestants in all their moods and states of dress and undress.

"I've seen basically everyone naked at some point," he said. "That's good and bad."

There's Erin Collins, for example, the 26-year-old real estate agent from Texas who brought along body paint as her only luxury item; Clay Jordan, 46, the married restaurateur with the golf club and ball; and Brian Heidik, the 34-year-old used car salesman from Quartz Hill, Calif., whose soft-core film credits are causing a stir on the Web.

So how does a guy from Guelph get a plum summer job like this while his classmates are pumping gas?

Connections, experience and downright good luck, Osburn said.

In May, a cameraman friend of Osburn's TV instructor was looking for an assistant after he was hired for the Survivor gig. Knowing Osburn had previously worked in Africa, Sri Lanka, Israel and Thailand doing language recordings for films and videos, his instructor asked if he was interested.

"I was in absolute shock. The fact it was my favourite show, it was a dream come true."

Survivor is a game show, soap opera, sociological drama, physical contest and voyeuristic thrill all wrapped up in one, he said.

"People either love or hate the show. They love it because we're watching ourselves. People who hate it think it's conniving and backstabbing."

On arrival June 5, Osburn was assigned a tent in a base camp on the far side of the island that became his home for six weeks. At night, he sweated in 30 C temperatures. On a humid day, it felt like 40 C.

An on-site wrangler was hired to get rid of any poisonous snakes that strayed into camp.

Until July 21, Osburn fetched fresh tapes and water, steered boats, lugged equipment up hills and scrambled to cover the camera during the bursts of rain which characterize the monsoon season.

Crew members weren't allowed to talk to the survivors except for official interviews, but with their inside knowledge, it was interesting to watch how the game played out.

"We'd know everybody's strategy from interviewing them and then we'd see them try to play their scheme," Osburn said.

He met host Jeff Probst, whose cabin was across the road from his tent.

"He's a nice guy in real life, but he really knows how to get under the skin of the contestants."

Back at camp, Osburn and the production crew ate catered Thai and American meals while hungry contestants foraged for food in thick jungle full of monkeys, snakes, rats, army ants, spiders and monitor lizards.

"They signed up for it," he said. "I felt jealous because I wanted to be a contestant deep down."

With college starting again, Osburn knows he'll be in the hot seat. He estimates only 50 people in the world know the identity of the two finalists, and that makes knowing even more delicious.

Come on, couldn't he throw us just one scrap?

"The game starts differently," he said, grinning like a Cheshire cat.

Woohoo!  Conestoga college rocks!  I looked once and then twice,  this couldn't be THE Contestoga College and THE Kitchener, and THE Record that I was living oh - 5 blocks away from a couple of weeks ago.  LOL.

Cool.  A Canadian Student from Addams' neck of the woods.  Kitchener is an hours drive from Toronto (roughly west of the city).  We were at music camp in the Kitchener Waterloo area and stayed not too far from Conestoga College.  My brother in law nearly took a teaching position there.  It's a wonderful city.

What a lucky guy.  I AM jealous!  and man I could not think of a better summer job.  A wonderful experience.

Now with all that wildlife on the island I think we are going to be seeing an interesting series.  Monitor Lizards?  Yikes!  :yikes:
