'Survivor: Thailand' Debut Draws Tribe of Young Viewers

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The premiere of "Survivor: Thailand" made a good-sized splash Thursday night (Sept. 19), especially among the young viewers advertisers love to target.
 
CBS' flagship reality show was the most-watched program of the night in terms of total viewers (just over 23 million) and among adults 18-49 (9.6 rating/28 share). It also scored among adults 18-34, earning a 9.3/29.
 
The total audience was slightly smaller than the premieres of the previous two editions of the game. "Survivor: Africa" drew 23.8 million viewers last fall, while "Marquesas" debuted to about 23.2 million people in midseason.
 
Among the show's key demographic groups, however, "Thailand's" premiere improved over that of "Marquesas" by 22 percent in adults 18-34 (from 7.6/20) and 5 percent in adults 18-49 (from 9.1/22).
 
"Survivor" aired opposite reruns on ABC and NBC and a movie on FOX Thursday. The competition will be stiffer next week, when NBC's "Friends" -- last season's top-rated series -- and "Scrubs" make their season debuts.

4M watch Survivor ... really

 As Dr. Frasier Crane would say, will this fresh hell never end?  
 
Global reports that nearly four million Canadians tuned in to the debut of Survivor: Thailand, indicating that this stupid show is still by far the most-watched program in Canada.  
 
The horrifying reality series scored a 15.9 rating in Toronto and 18.1 rating in Vancouver, easily outscoring much better shows on other channels.  
 
The really depressing part is that Survivor still rules with adults 18-49. In Ontario, 1.1 million 18- to 49-year-olds tuned in.  
 
Global estimates that that works out to 3.9 million total Canadians nationally, but its numbers have always been a little fuzzy and that's probably a total guess.  
 
The show also hit the road running in the U.S., with a time-period-winning 13.6 rating and 21 share, 35% higher than a rerun of Friends on NBC. That debut was roughly on par with the debuts of Survivor Africa (14.2 rating and 20 share) and Survivor: Marquesas (13.9 and 20).  
 
Next week will be a truer test in the U.S., when Friends returns for a ninth season. Global has both shows in Canada.

Sure it was the TV equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel, but that's not stopping ABC from celebrating a rare ratings victory.  
 
Launching several key new series a week ahead of the official start of the fall season, the network managed to beat its rerun-dominated competition in the battle for eyeballs.  
 
ABC averaged 11.1 million viewers in prime-time for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research.  
 
The net pulled in especially big numbers for the Tuesday premieres of the John Ritter sitcom 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (number four for the week with 17.3 million viewers) and Bonnie Hunt's Life with Bonnie (number five, 16.1 million), as well as old standby Monday Night Football (number three, 17.8 million)--the network's one stalwart from last year's viewer-challenged Who Wants to Be a Millionaire ( news - web sites)-dependent roster.  
 
Other ratings-grabbers for ABC included Saturday's Miss America ( news - web sites) Pageant (12 million viewers) and the Christopher Reeve special Courageous Steps (9.4 million). A prime-time foray by morning duo Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa did a so-so 8 million.  
 
Despite is weekly Nielsen victory, the network better keep the champagne on ice. With NBC, CBS and Fox rolling out new series and season premieres this week, ABC's ratings dominance will immediately be challenged. And the Alphabet net's Ben Affleck-helmed mystery series Push, Nevada is already experiencing a substantial fall-off. The pilot debuted on September 17 with a solid 12 million viewers to finish in 17th place for the week; but, the second episode, in its regular time slot last Thursday, got crushed by CBS' Big Brother 3, averaging 8 million viewers and finishing in 47th for the week.  
 
Speaking of CBS, the network tallied the week's most-watched program, as the debut of Survivor: Thailand nabbed more than 23 million viewers. Strong showings by Big Brother 3, reruns of CSI, Everbody Loves Raymond and Becker and the news mags 48 Hours and 60 Minutes helped power the Eyeball net to a second-place showing among total viewers, averaging 10.5 million for the week.  
 
Not counting the early Survivor debut, the network's new lineup launched last night, with the season premieres of Everbody Loves Raymond, King of Queens and Yes, Dear all winning their time slots, as did the new CSI: Miami, which gave CBS a huge jolt at 10 p.m. with 23 million viewers--the biggest September debut since ER back in 1994. (Those shows' ratings will be reflected in next week's Nielsens.)  
 
On the flipside, the network's broadcast of the third annual Latin Grammy was virtually unwatched, attracting just under 4 million viewers to land in 84th place in Nielsen's viewership ranking.  
 
NBC, meanwhile, scored with its award show, the 54th Primetime Emmys. The Sunday night ceremony attracted about 20 million viewers and was the second most-watched show last week. Overall, NBC finished third for the week, averaging 9.8 million viewers. Watch that number to jump with the return of Friends, Will & Grace ( news - Y! TV), Frasier and ER this week.  
 
(HBO, which tied NBC for the most Emmy Awards, hardly took a hit despite the tough competition from the Conan O'Brien ( news - Y! TV)-hosted affair. The second installment of the cable net's The Sopranos ( news - Y! TV) averaged 11.2 million viewers, down from the 13.4 million who tuned in for the fourth season premiere, but still excellent for HBO, which is seen in about as third as many homes as the broadcast networks.)  
 
Fox finished fourth among the major networks even though it introduced some much-hyped new shows last week. The network scored with the rookie variety show Cedric the Entertainer Presents (number 21, 10.4 million), the second season opener of The Bernie Mac Show (number 23, 10.2 million), That '70s Show (number 24, 10.1 million) and the debuts of Fastlane (number 25, 10 million) and John Doe (number 28, 9.8 million). But the heavily promoted Firefly, a new sci-fi series from Buffy creator Joss Whedon, didn't exactly light up the ratings, drawing just 6.2 million viewers in its Friday night premiere.  
 
Among the net-lets, UPN averaged 4.3 million viewers on the strength of Smackdown!, Enterprise and the new Twilight Zone, which drew 4.6 million viewers in its first outing Wednesday. The WB, meanwhile, averaged just 2.6 million viewers. The mini-net appears to have a hit with the new Treat Williams small-town doctor drama Everwood, which attracted 7.4 million viewers in its debut. But the net's other newbies--What I Like About You, Greetings from Tuscon, Family Affair and Do Over--struggled near the bottom of the ratings heap, although the WB said it was pleased with their performances among its coveted young female demo.  
 
Here's a rundown of the 10 most-watched shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:  
 
1. Survivor: Thailand, CBS, 23 million viewers

NBC Wins Thursday, 'CSI' Premiere Big for CBS

NBC's Must See TV lineup was back with a vengeance on Thursday (Sept. 26) securing a victory for NBC with a 15.6 rating/24 share. CBS was second with a 13.7/21. Meanwhile, the other four networks were left in the dust, with UPN, 4.3/6, FOX, 4.2/6, and ABC, 4.1/6, all grouped fairly close together, and The WB (2.2/3) bringing up the rear.
 
NBC also finished first in the adults 18-49 demographic with a 12.3 rating. CBS averaged an 8.5, FOX, 2.5, and ABC, 1.6.
 
 The season premire of "Friends," 20.1/31, and "Scrubs," 14.0/21, averaged a 17.1/26 at 8 p.m., snagging the No. 1 spot for NBC. CBS was second with "Survivor: Thailand," 12.2/19. The return of "Monk" on ABC garnered a 5.1/8 while the season premiere of UPN's "WWE SmackDown!" came in fourth. FOX re-aired the Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker movie "Rush Hour," leaving The WB's "Family Affair," 2.3/3, and "Do Over," 2.5/4 in last place.
 
 At 9 p.m., CBS moved to the head of the pack with the season premiere of "CSI," 17.9/27. NBC was second with the season premiere of "Will & Grace," 14.1/21, and the series premiere of "Good Morning Miami," 12.0/18, averaging a 13.1/20 for the hour. FOX's movie moved up to third place, while UPN's wrestling remained in fourth. ABC slipped dramatically to fifth place with "Push, Nevada," taking a mere 3.1/5 for the hour. However, The WB was still in last place with "JKX: The Jamie Kennedy Experiment," 2.3/3, and "Off Centre," 1.8/3.
 
The season premiere of "ER" took a 16.9/27 at 10 p.m., enough to beat CBS' series premiere of "Without a Trace," 11.0/18. ABC finished off its night with "PrimeTime Thursday."

"Friends" Has 33.3 Million Friends

Friends has more friends than ever.  
 
Last night's ninth and presumably final season premiere was the most-watched episode ever of NBC's Emmy-winning sitcom. The potential untangling of the Ross, Rachel, Joey triangle--which, of course, still contains several (k)nots--snagged 33.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

That gave the "Must-See" sitcom its biggest win over its toughest Thursday night competitor, CBS' Survivor. More than 21.7 million tuned in to see 27-year-old social worker Tanya Vance booted from Thailand back to Tennessee. While the Eye's not-so-friendly unscripted show was handily trounced by the NBC stalwart in the 8 p.m. slot, Survivor: Thailand rallied at 8:30, gaining a 25 percent bigger audience against the second season premiere of Scrubs. Ultimately, though, the reality show couldn't climb out of the also-ran category.  
 
Thursday night is arguably the most competitive on TV, with NBC and CBS battling for dominance.  
 
Indeed, CBS landed on top at 9 p.m. with the third season premiere of CSI. With its spinoff, CSI: Miami, attracting 23 million viewers to its debut Monday (the biggest September debut since ER in 1994) and with the original CSI ending last season by dethroning ER as the tube's top-rated drama, you had to figure the forensic-themed gorefest would score. And it did, pulling in its biggest audience yet: 30.5 million viewers.  
 
CSI buried its nearest challengers, NBC's Will & Grace and the rookie Good Morning, Miami. NBC did claim victory in the coveted 18-49 demo for the fifth season premiere of Will & Grace and trumpeted Good Morning, Miami as the season's most watched newbie sitcom, but that didn't add up to a real win.  
 
At 10 p.m., the pendulum swung back as the season opener of NBC's long-running ER premiered in first place, quarantining 26.7 million viewers with the payoff to last year's epidemic evacuation cliffhanger. However, CBS' new missing person's investigation series Without a Trace, starring Anthony LaPaglia, drew 16.2 million, proving tougher competition to the doc drama than last season's CIA drama The Agency, which only snagged 11.9 million. It was the Eye network's strongest challenge to ER since 1994's Chicago Hope.  
 
When all the beans were counted, NBC came out the overall winner, averaging 24.9 million viewers in prime time to CBS' 22.7 million. According to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research, the jockeying nets more than doubled the combined totals for both Fox (6.2 million) and ABC (5.9 million).  
 
ABC, which is looking to recover after a disastrous season last year, isn't going to win anything with the whodunit Push, Nevada. The Ben Affleck creation registered in fifth place in its regular 9 p.m. time slot Thursday night, attracting only 4.4 million viewers. That's down from last Thursday's 8.1 million, which was already a marked drop-off from the 12 million who sampled the premiere. Push, Nevada's numbers are even more perplexing than its Twin Peaks-like plot, since the show was sandwiched between the picked-up-from-cable Monk and Primetime Thursday, both of which came in third place last night in their time slots.  
 
For the night, the Alphabet net's lineup wound up tied with UPN's WWE Smackdown!-led roster. Fox did better in third place with a repeat showing of the movie Rush Hour, but the WB had a terrible night as their sitcom lineup of Family Affair, Do Over, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment and Off Centre barely registered a blip--although the Frog did gamely issue press releases claiming that it had bettered itself in various women's demos, despite the "brutal competition" from NBC and CBS.

Sure, NBC has Friends, but, as of right now, CBS has more friends
 
The Eyeball edged the Peacock to claim victory in the first week of the 2002-03 prime-time ratings race.  
 
As has become its way, ABC trailed in third (but not as badly as it trailed during the disaster that was the 2001-02 season), followed by Fox and the rest of the netlets (WB, UPN and Pax).  
 
Overall, CBS programs averaged 13.9 million viewers. The network placed five shows in the top 10, including two episodes of the recently Emmy'd Everybody Loves Raymond.  
 
NBC, last season's ratings champ, proved to be no chump, averaging 13.4 million viewers and grabbing five Top 10 spots. Friends, fresh off its own Emmy win for Outstanding Comedy Series, led the way for the "Must-See" mavens. Thirty-four million fans caught the ninth-season premiere hoping to learn if Rachel, Ross and Joey would sort out the wedding-proposal mess. (Answer: Sort of.)  
 
Milking the sitcom for everything its worth (which is a lot, considering the stars' $1 million-an-episode salaries), NBC said today it planned to stretch Friends' Thursday time slot from 8-8:30 p.m., to 8-8:32 p.m. (the better to trick, er, encourage audiences not to tune out whatever follows).  
 
As whopping as Friends' whopping premiere numbers were, Everybody Loves Raymond ( news - Y! TV) may have been the sitcom story of the week. Airing two episodes back-to-back on September 23, CBS saw 23.3 million people tune into the first installment (broadcast in the comedy's usual 9 p.m. Monday time slot), and 24 million people tune into the second installment (broadcast in the 9:30 time slot filled this past Monday by the newbie sitcom Still Standing). The show, er, shows were the fifth and fourth most-watched programs of the week, respectively.  
 
Aside from the Raymonds, CBS' top 10 shows were: CSI, the week's top-rated drama (taking second place, with 30.5 million viewers); CSI: Miami, the top-rated new show (sixth place, 23.1 million); and Survivor: Thailand (eighth place, 21.7 million).  
 
Not counting Rachel, et al., NBC's medal winners were: ER (third place, 26.7 million); Scrubs (seventh place, 22.3 million); Will & Grace ( news - Y! TV) (ninth place, 21.5 million); and, in a twist, the non-Thursday night entry, Tuesday's own Frasier (10th place, 21.1 million).  
 
If you're keeping score at home, you'll have noticed that, with CBS nabbing five Top 10 spots, and NBC nabbing five spots, there were exactly zero spots left for the other would-be contenders.  
 
ABC, averaging 9.9 million viewers for its week's worth of offerings, came closest to cracking the elite group. Its venerable Monday Night Football franchise powered its way to 11th place, scoring with 19.1 million viewers. Fourth-place Fox's highest-rated show was That '70s Show, boogying to 46th with 8.9 million. (Overall, Fox averaged 7.1 million viewers.)  
 
The WB, winning its weekly battle for fifth-place bragging rights with UPN (averaging 4.5 million viewers, to the latter's 4.2 million), climbed into the top 50 with Smallville (49th place, 8.7 million). UPN's top performer was the pile-driving WWE Smackdown (75th place, 6 million).  
 
Among the also-rans, ABC, cold off last year's disastrous performance, is perhaps under the most pressure to make the best of its so-so numbers. In its weekly ratings recap, the network declared victory in "four of the most interesting time period match-ups of the new season." (CBS and NBC, apparently, only win the un-interesting time period match-ups.)  
 
To be sure, ABC, which couldn't launch a new show to save Jason Alexander's prime-time life last year, is heading in the right direction with a pair of freshman sitcoms, John Ritter's 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (30th place, 12.8 million) and Life with Bonnie (34th place, 11.3 million).  
 
The network also appears to have developed a steady, near-top 20 hit with Damon Wayans' My Wife and Kids (21st place, 14.8 million). Look for Wayans' show, now in its third season, to be tested later this month when Fox's Bernie Mac Show finally makes it off the bench and launches its second season, following the baseball playoffs.  
 
If tests are the topic, ABC's much-pushed Push, Nevada and its time-traveling drama That Was Then are failing theirs. Push, cocreator Ben Affleck's attempt to channel David Lynch, sunk to 89th place (4.5 million); That Was Then finished in 91st (4.3 million). Not even the ABC spinmeisters could spin much positive out of those numbers--the two shows were virtually ignored in the network's ratings press release.  
 
Also not rating mentions (a sure sign that your show is not long for the schedule): Drew Carey's two prime-time contributions, his self-titled sitcom (76th place, 5.9 million); and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (77th place, 5.7 million).  
 
In other ratings highlights:  
 
 
Among freshman series, NBC's Good Morning, Miami (13th place, 17.5 million), American Dreams (22nd place, 13.9 million), Boomtown (25th place, 13.5 million) and CBS' taxi-cab-driven Hack (29th place, 12.9 million) all got off to top 30 starts.  
Writer-producer Joss Whedon topped himself, with his new Fox sci-fi series, Firefly (80th place, 5.5 million), besting his old reliable UPN series, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (83rd place, 5 million).  
The WB's sophomore sitcom Off Centre pulled the primetime caboose, ranking 106th out of 106 shows (not counting the stuff on Pax, which nobody watches anyway). On the other hand, Off Centre did manage to attract 1.9 million viewers, which, in the scheme of things, seems like a lot for an abject failure.  
 
Here's a rundown of the 10 most-watched shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

NBC Takes Thursday, ABC Struggles

CBS may be chipping away at NBC, but the peacock is still No. 1 when it comes to Thursday night's. The network took a 14.3 rating/22 share on Thursday, followed by CBS' 13.0/21. ABC, UPN and FOX were third through fifth with a 4.7/7, 4.4/7 and a 4.2/7 respectively. The WB brought up the rear with a 2.4/3.
 
NBC also finished first in the adults 18-49 demographic with an 11.3 rating. CBS averaged an 8.2, ABC, 1.9, and FOX, 1.8.
 
 "Friends," 17.4/28, and "Scrubs," 12.2/19, averaged a 14.8/24 at 8 p.m. for NBC, while CBS' dramafest over on "Survivor: Thailand" took a 12.2/19. ABC was third with "Monk," 5.5/9, while UPN took fourth with "WWE Smackdown!" FOX was in fifth place with the divisional playoffs game between the Giants and the Braves, while The WB tried to be funny with "Family Affair," 2.5/4, and "Do Over," 2.6/4.

And now for this week's recap of the CSI-Law & Order, er, prime-time ratings...  
 
Forgive us our confusion, but the 2002-03 season is looking an awful lot like one big battle between shows titled either CSI or Law & Order.  
 
For the ratings week ended Sunday, fully one-quarter of the top 20 was occupied by series from the two franchises.  
 
Thanks to its CSI outlets, CBS claimed its second straight victory of the new fall season, besting NBC (and its Law & Orders).  
 
Overall, an estimated 13.3 million viewers took in programming on the Eyeball, compared to the 12.6 million who watched the Peacock.  
 
CBS placed five shows in the top 10, led by (natch) the original CSI (second place, with 29.5 million viewers) and (double natch) newbie CSI: Miami (sixth place, 21.5 million).  
 
NBC also placed five shows in the top 10, including the reigning prime-time champ, Friends (first place, 31.5 million). Its myriad Law & Order shows stacked up this way: the original Law & Order (ninth place, 19.1 million); Law & Order: Criminal Intent (18th place, 15.3 million); and, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (19th place, 15.1 million).  
 
In non-related CSI-Law & Order news, ABC, which could use a CSI and/or a Law & Order, lagged in third place, averaging 9.7 million overall viewers.  
 
Monday Night Football was ABC's highest-rated show, and its lone top 10 entry. It tied the freshman CBS sitcom Still Standing for the 10th and final spot, with 18.1 million viewers. (Now, if ABC can convince the NFL to get with the CSI cloning program, and play football on Friday nights and Saturday nights and...)  
 
At least the spin from the beleaguered Alphabet is upbeat: "Things are really looking up for ABC..." But while its new Tuesday night comedy block (led by John Ritter (news)'s 8 Simple Rules..., finishing 28th last week with 13.1 million viewers) is indeed "looking up," overall ABC viewership is down 10 percent from last season's disaster. (By comparison, NBC is off just 2 percent; CBS and Fox are up 16 and 12 percent, respectively.)  
 
Three new ABC bombs that seem destined for quick detonation: MDs (71st place, 7.4 million); Push, Nevada (93rd place, 4.4 million); and That Was Then (94th place, 4.3 million).  
 
CBS and NBC, in contrast, have launched virtually dud-free fall lineups. CBS has three new top 20 hits: CSI: Miami, Still Standing and Without a Trace (which finished 17th last week with 15.4 million viewers). NBC has three new top 30 shows: Good Morning, Miami (14th place, 16.8 million), American Dreams (26th place, 13.6 million) and Hidden Hills (27th place, 13.4 million).  
 
Among the Eyeball's disappointments (barely mentioned, if at all, in the network's weekly bragfest): The Amazing Race 3 (52nd place, 9.5 million); Presidio Med (62nd place, 8.3 million); and Robbery Homicide Division (63rd place, 8.2 million).  
 
In addition to soft ratings, the makers of Presidio Med are coping with the absence of costar Blythe Danner (news), on leave following last week's death her husband, TV producer Bruce Paltrow.  
 
At NBC, the new Tuesday night sitcom The In-Laws (49th place, 10.1 million) isn't exactly ingratiating itself into the Must-See family.  
 
Among the other network also-rans, Fox finished fourth for the week, averaging 8.1 million viewers. WB continued to best UPN, averaging 5 million viewers to the latter's 4.1 million.  
 
Fox appears to be behind the wheel of a minor hit in the new action-cop show, Fastlane (60th place, 8.3 million). Overall, its top-rated series was That '70s Show (54th place, 8.9 million).  
 
At the WB, Smallville (59th place, 8.4 million) continued to fly high, with UPN led, per usual, by WWE Smackdown! (79th place, 6.1 million).  
 
So far, the WB is outdueling UPN for the dis-honor of launching the season's lowest-rated new show. The Frog's time-travel-minded Do Over (not to be confused with ABC's similarly themed, and similarly ignored, That Was Then) ranked 105th out of 108 shows on the six networks, with 2.5 million viewers.  
 
UPN's flailing freshman Haunted couldn't scare up many more fans. The hourlong series, starring Matthew Fox as a P.I. who spies dead people, ranked 102nd for the week, with 2.7 million viewers.  
 
Here's a rundown of the 10 most-watched shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

NBC, CBS Tie for Thursday Lead

Thursday night's ratings race was pretty much a two-network affair, with CBS and NBC tying for the top spot among households and leaving their other rivals in the dust.
 
CBS and NBC each averaged a 13.8 rating/22 share in primetime, although CBS held a slight edge in total viewers (22.6 million to NBC's 21.7 million). ABC, 4.1/7, and FOX, 2.8/4, finished way behind. UPN scored a 4.6/7 in the metered markets, while The WB posted a 1.9/3.
 
 Among adults 18-49, NBC came out on top with a 10.6 rating to CBS' 8.5, FOX's 2.0 and ABC's 1.8.
 
"Friends," 15.9/25, and "Scrubs," 11.4/18, put NBC on top at 8 p.m., besting CBS' "Survivor: Thailand," 12.6/20. "Monk," 5.3/8, was third for ABC, with UPN's "WWE Smackdown" in fourth. FOX was fifth with "Fastlane," filling time before the World Series begins this weekend. The WB's "Family Affair" and "Do Over" averaged 2.0/3.
 
CBS won the 9 p.m. hour with "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 18.3/28, the night's top show. NBC dropped to second with "Will & Grace," 12.7/19, and "Good Morning Miami," 10.5/16. "Smackdown" moved up to third, followed by a FOX "America's Most Wanted" special, 3.3/5, about the Washington, D.C.-area sniper killings. ABC's "Push, Nevada" limped toward its conclusion at 2.3/4. The WB stayed in sixth with "The Jamie Kennedy Expermient" and "Off Centre."  
 
 NBC regained the lead at 10 p.m. thanks to "ER," 16.1/27. CBS' "Without a Trace" averaged 10.3/17 and ABC's "Primetime Thursday" 4.8/8.

Four seasons in, it looks like 'Survivor' - starring host Jeff Probst - may just 'thai' its past ratings.  
 
CBS' "Survivor" has been though four editions and has displayed some Nielsen erosion, yet experts believe it will remain among the top-rated shows on the air this season.
While other prime-time reality shows such as Fox's "Temptation Island" and "Boot Camp" have come and gone since CBS unveiled "Survivor" in May 2000, the granddaddy of the reality contest genre has been able to hang on to a sizable audience each time out.
 
Media analysts expect "Survivor: Thailand," launching tonight at 8, to draw roughly the same audience as the last two editions — about 20 million viewers. At a time when even the biggest shows tend to lose viewers each season, just maintaining the crowd from a year ago is notable.
 
"Never underestimate the value of being first," said TV researcher Tim Brooks, co-author of "The Complete Directory to Prime-Time Network and Cable TV Shows." "Sometimes the first show to open a genre outlives all its imitators, like 'Gunsmoke' did among TV Westerns."
 
Others attribute "Survivor's" staying power to the months-long gap that CBS has left between installments.
 
"'Survivor' hasn't oversaturated itself," said Steve Sternberg, senior vice president for ad-buying firm Magna Global. "I think people miss it."
 
Others credit the show's cast, which this season includes a former soft-core porn movie actor, a pastor and a Navy swim instructor, for keeping people tuned in.
 
"The producers still do a decent job of casting 'Survivor' with people that appeal to viewers," said Sam Armando, director of national TV research for ad-buying firm Starcom Worldwide. "I think 'Survivor' still will be the number-one-ranked reality show this fall."
 
But while "Survivor: Thailand" has earned a thumbs-up from most analysts, the franchise has lost some buzz.
 
An estimated 72 million viewers watched the final episode of the first "Survivor" in August 2000; 25 million watched the conclusion of "Survivor: Marquesas" last May, according to Nielsen Media Research. And, although recent "Survivor" editions have averaged 20 million viewers, the first two averaged more than 28 million.
 
"Survivor" executive producer Mark Burnett considers 20 million to be the series' core audience, and he'll trot out new tricks in "Survivor: Thailand" in hopes of preventing those loyal legions from drifting to another show's shore.
 
Viewers should expect revamped reward and immunity challenges and a significantly altered eating contest, according to Burnett and "Survivor" host Jeff Probst.
 
"I'd like the show to evolve slowly and subtly," said Burnett, who with CBS already is casting for a sixth "Survivor." "We get an average of 20 million viewers each week and I'd like to keep them off-balance. But I don't want to have a revolution and break something that's already working so well."

CBS Holds On Tight for Thursday Win

With the peacock weakened by repeats, CBS easily beat NBC for the top spot on Thursday, snagging a 12.6 rating/19 share. NBC managed to come in second, taking a 9.2/14, barely ahead of FOX's 9.0/14. ABC was fourth with a 4.9/8, followed by UPN, 4.4/6 and The WB, 2.5/3.
 
Among adults 18-49, CBS came out on top with a 7.6 rating to NBC's 6.6, FOX's 4.7 and ABC's 2.1.
 
 Audience preferred to watch Robb get the boot from "Survivor: Thailand" at 8 p.m., 11.7/18, over "Friends," 11.5/18, and "Scrubs," which averaged a 10.5/16 for the hour. FOX gave over its night to Game 5 of the World Series between the Anaheim Angels and San Francisco Giants, while ABC aired a "PrimeTime Thursday" special about the Washington D.C.-area sniper, 6.4/10. UPN's "WWE Smackdown!" came in fifth, over The WB's comedies "Family Affair," 2.6/4, and "Do Over," 2.5/4.
 
 CBS also won the 9 p.m. hour with "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 15.3/23, the night's top show. FOX rise to second with the World Series, while NBC dropped to third with "Will & Grace," 9.2/14, and "Good Morning Miami," 8.2/12. "Smackdown" moved up to fourth, followed by the series finale of "Push, Nevada" on ABC, 5.4/9. The WB stayed in sixth with "JKX: The Jamie Kennedy Expermient" and "Off Centre."  
 
 "Without a Trace" snagged a final win for CBS during the 10 o'clock hour with a 10.9/17. A special "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" on NBC tied with baseball on FOX, 8.6/14, and ABC finished things off with a second episode of "PrimeTime Thursday."

Among adults 18-49, NBC also came out on top with a 10.2, beating CBS' 7.9, ABC's 2.2 and FOX's 2.1.
 
 At 8 p.m., audiences preferred to watch "Friends," 15.7/22, and "Scrubs," 11.7/18 over the latest twist thrown at them by "Survivor: Thailand," 10.8/18. ABC aired the two-hour pilot of "Monk" (5.2/8 average from 8 to 10 p.m.) while UPN gave over its night to a special Halloween-themed "WWE Smackdown!" FOX brought back "30 Seconds to Fame" with two back-to-back episodes averaging a 2.9/5, while The WB brought up the rear with "Family Affair," and "Do Over," each taking a 1.9/3.
 
 CBS won the nine o'clock hour with the tale of a murderous magician on "CSI," 17.3/27, beating "Will & Grace," 10.8/17 and "Good Morning Miami," 9.5/15. ABC continued with its movie, while UPN stuck with wrestling. FOX's "Funniest Wedding Outtakes," 4.0/6, had enough people laughing over The WB's "JKX: The Jamie Kennedy Experiment," 1.5/2, and "Off Centre," 1.4/2.

"CSI's" domination of the 9 p.m. hour helped CBS gain a tie with NBC in the overall ratings, although NBC still held a big advantage among younger viewers.
 
 The top two networks each averaged a 13.6 rating/21 share for the night, with none of their competitors anywhere near them. ABC averaged 3.7/6 and FOX 3.1/5. UPN posted a 4.3/6 in the metered markets, while The WB trailed everyone at 2.3/3.
 
NBC averaged a 10.7 rating among adults 18-49, leading CBS, 8.3, FOX, 1.8, and ABC, 1.7.
 
 "Friends," 15.8/25, and "Scrubs," 12.6/19, combined to give NBC an 8 p.m. win over CBS' "Survivor: Thailand," 12.5/20. "WWE Smackdown" (4.3/6 average from 8 to 10 p.m.) was third for UPN. ABC's "Concert for World Children's Day" and two episodes of FOX's "30 Seconds to Fame" tied for fourth. The WB averaged 2.2/3 with "Family Affair" and "Do Over."

According to today's Daily Variety, the WB is clipping the wings of Birds of Prey, its next-generation Bat show, after just 13 episodes.  
 
The report, citing "industry insiders," says ratings unworthy of a superhero and a behind-the-scenes shakeup doomed the show. For the prime-time week ended Sunday, Birds of Prey ranked 107th out of 118 shows. The outing was the Wednesday night's series worst of the fall, drawing just 4 million Bat fans, down from its season-to-date average of 4.9 million.  
 
A call to a WB rep was not returned Tuesday.  
 
Birds of Prey, starring Dark Angel alum Ashley Scott (news) as the Huntress, the crime-fighting spawn of Batman and Catwoman, debuted October 9. The premiere attracted a nothing to Joker about 7.6 million viewers. But the show failed to match the early promise, its caped-and-cowled characters apparently turning off fans of the mortal denizens of Dawson's Creek, its time-slot neighbor.  
 
The family sitcom Grounded for Life might have become the week's second victim, but the WB saved the third-season comedy, recently benched by Fox. The show will debut on its new network home after the February sweeps, Variety says.  
 
Good news for Grounded means not-good news for two other WB comedies. Do Over and Family Affair, previously issued full-season passes by the Frog, now will be asked to provide the network with just 19 episodes a piece (down from the usual 22). The latest ratings recap best illustrates the freshman shows' struggles: The all-new Family Affair placed 116th (2.5 million viewers); the time-traveling Do Over finished in dead-last 118th (2.1 million).  
 
UPN, meanwhile, has super-sized the seasons of the comedies Girlfriends (92nd place, 5.1 million), The Parkers (98th place, 4.8 million), One on One (94th place, 5 million), and Half & Half (105th place, 4.3 million). The netlet wants Girlfriends and The Parkers to hang around for 25 episodes each; One on One and Half & Half, for 23 each.  
 
The crew of Firefly (101st place, 4.5 million), the struggling sci-fi show from Buffy creator Joss Whedon, would be happy to last a regular-sized 22-episode season. But for now they'll have to be content with the news, per Variety, that Fox has ordered two more episodes.  
 
While Fox, the WB and UPN tweaked their schedules, NBC took honors as the most-watched network of the week ended Sunday--its first such victory of the season.  
 
Suffering no shortage of self-esteem (or ways to crunch numbers), NBC has been beating its chest even as it routinely finished second to CBS. Now it has the eyeballs to back up its swagger. Led by its Thursday night lineup, NBC shows averaged 13.6 million viewers, to CBS' 12.7 million.  
 
Going into the week, CBS had won all but one stage of the 2002-03 season. But it stumbled badly on Sunday night, with the concluding half of the miniseries Master Spy: The Robert Hanssen (news - web sites) Story, starring William Hurt, going deep undercover in 77th place (7.3 million).  
 
And while CBS saw CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (news - Y! TV) score another first-place victory (29.9 million), it also saw NBC revive two of its struggling shows via the old Very Special Episode. The venerable Frasier perked up to 11th place (17.3 million) thanks to Niles' heart problems. The feel-good Ed felt really good in 31st place (12.6 million) thanks to an almost wedding for the bowling alley gang.  
 
Elsewhere, ABC's The Bachelor (12th place, 16.8 million) rung up the Peacock's The West Wing (news - web sites) (16th place, 15.8 million) for the second week in a row. The matrimonial-minded reality series wraps its second season on Wednesday.  
 
While Bachelor Aaron Buerge may or may not end up sealing the marriage deal with his prospective bride, the show's producers have sealed a deal with ABC for a new reality show entitled Are You Hot? The series, slated for a 2003 debut, will seek out the nation's hottest hotties (one man, one woman) through a series of American Idol-esque judged elimination rounds before letting viewers decide on the steamiest of them all.  
 
Overall, things continued to heat up at ABC last week, with the network topping its previous season ratings highs. Led by Monday Night Football (eighth place, 19.6 million) and Jennifer Lopez (news)'s engagement announcement to Primetime's Diane Sawyer (18th place, 14.9 million), its shows averaged 10.6 million viewers, good for third place.  
 
Fox's dismal November continued. The network flailed in fourth, averaging 7.7 million viewers. The WB and UPN played it close, with the Frog edging its rival 4.7 million viewers to 4.2 million.
