Last movie you saw...

I thought I would start an on-going thread about movies we've seen recently and don't want to start a whole new thread.

I certainly wouldn't start one for Dead in the Water which I watched last weekend on WGN.  But it was pretty good. Slow but good.  Good twists and turns.

My sister was watching Ever After (Drew Barrymore, Angelica Houston)  yesterday on cable TV, so I also sat there to watch (my Internet was still broken yesterday). The bad thing was the movie got cut off when it was about to be finished!  Angry

I watched Team America World Police last week.

Other than the nasty and disturbing "puppet love" (which was actually far worse than i had imagined) it was an awesome movie.  Watch especially if you dislike Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn as strongly as i do

"Escape from New York" (on DVD).... yep the old one, with Kurt Russell (who I swear does not age!!)  My DD had seen Escape from LA and so we decided to get this one and watch.  And "Shaun of the Dead", which we both thought was hilarious.  I love Netflix, let's me watch old and new movies... and introduce her to some I enjoyed at her age.

I have "Frida" coming - anyone seen this?  A colleague from school recommended it.

I loved "Team America".. thought Kim Jong Il was hilarous!!

We watched "zorro" this afternoon while keeping the grandchildren.
Mr L makes a good zorro, since he had to duel with a 4 yr old all afternoon.
Before that, we watched the last half of "The Unforgiven" and he played guns Grin
He makes a good playmate for Cowboys & Badmen! Wink

We watched Sister Act this morning. It's a family favorite. Grin Then we followed it with Anacondas, Hunt for the Blood Orchid (or something like that). Some scenes are good, some are boring. Then tonight we saw Million Dollar Baby. I think it's a sad movie, and the end just made me wonder. I think I might watch it again.

I watched "Frida" last night (this is the one that Salma Hayek was nominated for at the Oscars.. did she win??)  Anyway, about Frida Kahlo's life.  She's a Mexican artist, was married to Diego Rivera... I'd never heard of her.  It was VERY good, and I understand why Hayek was nominated.  Some very dark parts, and it's rated "R."  Not something I'd watch with the kids... but it's a great "grown up" film.  Here's the synopsis on IMBD:

I have three videos here to watch - just arrived yesterday "Better Off Dead" "Closer" and I can't remember the name of the other one, but it's that one that's like a satire of a Jacques Couteau type character... want to say Bill Murray in it? (My daughter picked that one.. Smiley)  Know what I'll be doing this weekend..

Found it - The Aquatic Life with Steve Zissou - with Bill Murray and Owen Wilson.

We watched a 7 times Oscar Winning movie, filmed in 1946.
Totally a must see for good movie entertainment.

Colleen, had I known "Dirty Dancing" was on, I might have been up with you!

I've never tired of this movie, the storyline
isn't so great but the music and dancing surely is!  Cool

I watched 4 movies earlier!

1. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - definitely one of the best films I have seen in terms of cinematography/directing. Reminds me of Alfonso Cuaron in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Unfortunate Events is very entertaining, and I might get a copy of the movie for myself! Awesome! I might also buy the books as well.  Cool

2. Meet the Fockers - I haven't finished it yet, since I have to sleep earlier, but there were a few "laugh out loud" moments IMO. Maybe I didn't get to watch the good parts?

3. Seabiscuit - good movie, touching and inspiring.

4. Spider-man - hehe, I just caught this on TV and watched it again. Of course it was great!  Grin

also a Matthew Broderick musical film which I just saw while looking for a show to watch... but unfortunately I didn't got the title... it was a story of a Musical con salesman who goes town to town to trick people on making a band....  and I think their soundtrack is 'Till There Was You'.... nice movie...

Pau, I think it was "76 Trombones", a remake of a 60's musical which
starred Robert Preston,  Shirley Jones, and  Ronnie Howard,
who was about 6 yrs old at the time.  A great musical!

Pau, I totally LOVE musicals Cool  There aren't enough of them any longer.
Maybe because of the expense in filming.

If you get a chance, watch the movies with Ester Williams
swimming and the synchronized swimmers.
You may have never heard of her.  She was an Olympic swimmer,  went on
to make movies.  She was also married to Fernando Lamas at one time.

A lot of older movies are much better than today's films.
Definitely the ones made in the 40's - 60's.   Classics indeed Cool

One night last week, Mr L was napping in his chair and I was flippping channels.
Stopped on one with "Border" in the title, starring Angelina Jolie & Clive Owen.
A very interesting story!

The Music Man - the original had Robert Preston (and was much better than the TV version.. Smiley)

Just a bit of trivia - little Ronnie Howard plays the little brother in the older version.  There was a Happy Days episode where Howard and Marion are going to the movies and The Music Man was showing.  Marion stops outside the theatre and says "This boy reminds me so much of Richie.".. LOL.. thought it was a great line.

The last movies we rented were "The Aviator" and "National Treasure".  Visually, Aviator was great, we just didn't like the movie.  That might have been because it was about Howard Hughes decline into insanity and was depressing in that way.   NT was very entertaining.

Musicals were always my favorites.   When I was growing up, they made a lot of them.  My DH doesn't care that much for them, but he did enjoy Seven Brides.   I bought "Singin' in the Rain".  I watched it over and over when it was new.  I worked as cashier at a movie theater, and when the box office closed, I was in there watching.   Everyone should remember Donald O'Conner's dance where he ran up the furniture and walls, and at the end went through the wall.

Last night I watched a movie that Rachael reccomended.  Garden State.  It was a kind of quircky coming of age movie.  If you like Natalie Portman it is a must see.  The male lead is Andrew Largeman.  Braff plays the lead and is also the writer and director.  I thought he has an amazing resemblence to Ray Ramano.

Rachel,
I am a musical freak!!!  My favorites are Sound of Music, South Pacific,  and my all time favorite, Brigadoon!!!!

I would have to say "Singin' In The Rain" is a favorite, since my friend and I sang it for a Choral Test when in 7th Grade and we have the DVD.  I also bought it for my Granddaughter as a Christmas Present, along with "Grease".

"South Pacific"  another BIG favorite Cool

Aw...come on, now, Shamon.  It was indeed tedious in some of the parts but I think reading up on Howard Hughes helps give more of an appreciation to the movie.  I thought Dicapprio did a good acting job in it.

The Aviator was an EXCELLENT movie.  Leo did a wonderful acting job of
capturing the obcessive personality of Hughes.  Cate Blanchett also did
a wonderful impersonating Hepburn!

It makes sense if one doesn't know any of the bio on Howard Hughes
it might not be understood and enjoyed.  I've read his Biography, know
about his obsesssive behavior and his Genius mind, albeit weird to some.
Inventing the underwire bra must have been atwist for the designers of
is aircraft/tool company!

Read some on him, then watch the movie again.
Your view will be different, I would think!

All in all, it proves MONEY doesn't conquer love and or good health!
As he died basically alone on the 7th floor of the Princess Hotel in Acapulco!

YT, Howard 'discovered' Jane Russell and cast her in "The Outlaw".
He wanted her breasts to look as they did when he first met her, up, out and standing at attention.  This was for the BIG scene in the hay!

Thus, to the drawing board!

Not a big Leo fan ourselves.   Focus on the bio of Hughes.
If one does not know about him, this film won't mean much to a person.
I read his Bio years ago, and he is from Texas!

I have seen the following movies yesterday:

1. 28 Days Letter - A British horror movie that will remind you of Resident Evil and Night of the Living Dead. It's ok, there are scenes that will give you a scream. It's sort of an artsy horror movie.

2. Elektra - Some scenes are boring, but I love Jennifer Garner so I say it's a great movie!

3. Sweet Home Alabama - It's a funny movie, and some of the dialogue reminded me of "flame posts".  Grin

Saw "Taking Lives" with Angelina Jolie on DVD on saturday.  It was weird, glad I didn't see it in the theater for 8 dollars, but it was worth the rental

Without a Paddle is Seth Green (of Buffy fame and Austin Powers), Dax Shepherd and Matthew Lillard (Shaggy in Scooby-Doo).

As for Aviator - was most interesting!!

I saw "Bewitched" yesterday.  I was looking forward to this movie because I loved the tv show when I was young.  it was on Thursday nights!  I am sorry to report that I fell asleep during most of this movie!  I have never done that before.  I don't think it was entirely the fault of the movie.   Smiley

Well, we rented some movies tonight and the last one I saw was the Dead Poet's Society. Didn't watch all of it, but what parts I did see of it I liked.

And we also Flight of the Phoenix which was very good! (except they swear way too much. Lips Sealed)

Two movies I watched:

1. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - The special effects in this move are not that great, but I still found this movie entertaining. I wonder why? Cheesy

2. Chicago - This was the second time I have seen the movie, and now I understand it more. I still think Moulin Rouge is better.  Grin

I watched "Coach Cater" that was an amazing movie.  It was just great.  What I liked was when they told you who was doing what at the end of the movie with the team members.   Truley a very well done movie, makes it all that much better that it was a true story...

Over the weekend, when all of us were about
to fall asleep in our chairs, we watched:
1.  Hitch, this must be for young single folks,
we didn't get into it and took it out of the DVD Player!
2.  The Pacifier, different for Vin Diesel, but entertaining!
3.  Coach Carter, awesome movie about real people's achievements!

I enjoyed it... but not fond of the guy who played the Phantom (Gerard Butler).  Patrick Wilson (Raoul) and Emmy Rossum (Christine) sounded so much more .... something.. operatic I suppose... he just sounded like an amateur next to the two of them... his singing actually bugged me.. almost like he was off key... Sad

Someone has to like it and someone usually doesn't!
Ya''ll know how I love movies, but this one didnt do it for me!

Yes, Dakato is an excellent little actress!

I do believe one thing I couldn't get past is how disgusted I am with Tom Cruise.  Maybe another actor would ahve made the difference with me likeing it.  Then, maybe not!

1. War of the Worlds - AWESOME. I catch myself open-mouthed on some of the scenes. It's one of Spielberg's best films, IMO. Brilliant!

2. Ghost Ship - I liked it. There was gore, but there was also sadness underneath the whole movie. The end would have been good, except for the final twist, which I didn't like at all. LOL. But remove that part and it's all good.

3. Cheaper by the Dozen - I like this movie. It's funny and warm, and there's some drama. It reminds me of the simple fun of just being with your family. I can totally relate to the chaos that kids make, because when we were kids I knew we made our parents crazy, but they still love us in the end.

She's nine!!  She was really amazing in the singing bit where Tom and Tim have their "final battle" so to speak... to have that sort of intensity in her acting at the age of nine.. what the heck kind of "experience" can she have to draw on for that??  Pure talent!!

Dakota is eleven, she said so on Leno two weeks ago.
She should have been the one promoting the movie all this time.
She has been a real profession in any movie we've seen.

Think about how much more couch jumping time Tom
would have had if Dakota had done all the promos! Roll Eyes

1. White Noise - scary movie. I would have liked a different ending though.
2. Hide and Seek - Robert DeNiro, Dakota Fanning, Famke Janssen. Awesome movie. It's creepy and mysterious. There's a twist in the end and even though I guessed it, it was still great!

I have a question about Hide and Seek - I don't like scary (Dark Water, The Ring, Nightmare part 1-10000), I do like thriller though (Secret Window, Identity, etc.)

Do you think I would like this?  We've been considering getting it.

I've been meaning to watch Identity since I saw its trailer a few years (or a year?) ago but I never seem to remember watching it.

Hide and Seek is definitely not the same genre as Nightmare on Elm Street/Friday the 13th/Halloween. It doesn't have gore, as far as I can remember.

I think that you would like Hide and Seek. It definitely falls into the "thriller" category. A few places made me jump but I loved it. Dakota Fanning is great in this movie.

I watched The Pacifier 2 days ago. It was ok-funny, but I like how there are several plot twists throughout the movie, and of course the "bad guy twist" was a surprise.  Cheesy

The Aviator - Martin Scorcese is a great director in this movie. The movie is not the typical life story that I usually see. Most of the time the movie is interesting, but some parts bored me. It won't be one of my favorites, but I am happy I watched it.

I4S and QT and I watched Anaconda 2 while on vacation.  Loved it!  It was filmed in Borneo and all of the Survivor references were funny.  Especially liked the little black dude. He was hilarious and kept us laughing.  So glad he wasn't eaten.

I watched Finding Neverland this morning. I like the director of the movie. The colors were vivid and the lighting was well done. The actors are superb! Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet deserve an applause for such great performances. Kate was nominated an Oscar for this movie, I think.

Great movie!  Cool But it won't be something I will personally watch over and over again. Smiley

I just watched Fantastic Four and it's a good movie. The focus on each of the characters are balanced. Some parts of the movie are funny, especially scenes between Human Torch and The Thing.  Cheesy There's drama too and a little action, although some say the action scenes are not enough.

1. Flight of the Phoenix - a surprisingly good movie. There is action, drama, suspense, and a few light moments. There are also little plot twists scattered throughout the movie to keep you entertained. I'll probably watch this movie again.

2. Hellboy - a good movie as well. I think it's not only an action movie, but drama as well. The plot is a bit simple but the characters are interesting.

Hotel Rwanda - and if you've not seen it I would STRONGLY recommend it!!  I was hesitant to watch, as it's about the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990's.  I could never watch Schindler's List... I just can't take the "pain" that comes from these movies.

But, this one was different.  Instead of focusing on violence and massacre of the Rwandans, it focused on the man who worked at the hotel in Rwanda.  A group of refugees ended up housed in the hotel and he worked to get them all safely out of the country.

There are graphic scenes of dead bodies, but the scenes are short and are basically used to show what was going on outside the gates of the hotel.

Went to see March of the Penguins today.  It's very good, though I could have saved 6.50 and waited for the DVD.  What got me, is what a "love story" it is... who'd think a documentary on penguins could be made into a love story?  IF you decide to go see it, be sure to sit through the credits and watch the clips of the photographers filming the penguins... quite cute!!

I watched Gremlins on TV earlier. It's a movie by Steven Spielberg!  Shocked It's not that great, but it's fun.

Saw Guess Who's coming to Dinner, an oldie, it was ok, it was unintentionally funny i think due to the time period.  But it got kinda preachy at the end

Looking forward to Guess Who

The last one I watched was the Special edition of Akira (the anime). Considering that I was watching Akira for the first time and the fact that I don't like many animes, I was supprisingly satisfied. The plot is just extraordinary and the ST is more the great. Now I'm trying to figure out some of the things that happaned in the movie.

finally saw Casablanca.... WHAT A GREAT MOVIE ! Wow... I was speechless... The screenplay was brilliant, especially the dialogues... Too bad we see more vain special effects in today's movies than subtlety and intelligence...
